Austin McCormick’s Company XIV’s “Pinocchio:
A Fantasy of Pleasures” returns
from a SMASH HIT SUCCESS at the
Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2011!!!
With 2,541 other
shows to choose from, “Pinocchio: A Fantasy of Pleasures”
won the hearts of audiences and
critics alike, packed houses, 4 and 5
Star reviews, every “best of” dance
list, and the honor of being picked as a
HOT SHOW from the Guardian, the Scotsman
and the List!
Check out what reviewers were raving
about:
“Company XIV’s talent here is to
give us something which isn’t black and
white, where the lines between glamour
and seediness, love and desire,
gaudiness and real beauty are all a
dizzy blur… it feels as if a painting by
one of the great Renaissance masters has
come to life.”
- The British Theatre Guide
“Pinocchio has an assortment of
flavours for audiences to feast upon –
and it’s quite a banquet. Company XIV
has always taken a maverick approach to
dance, and this production is no
exception…. inspired…fresh…. and
unexpected…”
– The Scotsman
“This is what performance is all
about. Take one fairytale; add a dollop
of decadence, a splash of debauchery and
the entirety of Company XIV. Twist until
dark. Serve. Now enjoy the sumptuous
feast that is Pinocchio: A Fantasy of
Pleasures.”
– Broadway Baby
“Thank the fringe Gods for Company
XIV – whose Pinocchio – A Fantasy of
Pleasures is no ordinary children’s
fairy tale. Austin McCormick’s concept
and direction plays with a multitude of
disciplines as he interweaves burlesque,
opera and dance, melding baroque with
modern choreography… Go on, treat
yourself to some decadence.”
– The Skinny
“Company XIV, from America, slip
into decidedly decadent mode…for a
commedia-cabaret about the seductive
follies that almost rob Pinocchio of his
chance to be a real boy…Austin
McCormick’s company are an accomplished,
versatile ensemble with serious circus,
dance and singing skills….Wouldn’t you,
like Pinocchio, want to stay on a
Pleasure Island where lithe, near-naked
bodies dance with such raunchy allure?
It’s an exuberant romp that teases,
pleases and – commendably – doesn’t go
for cheap jokes about that long, phallic
proboscis.”
– The Herald
“An artistic delight, this
neo-baroque production is a ravishing
fusion of opera, ballet, commedia
dell’arte, street dance, burlesque, and
Fellini-inspired surrealism. Indulge
your visual and aural fantasies with
this extravagant performance packed with
spectacular pirouetting and sensual,
seamless movement. The fairytale is
reinvented magnificently.”
– Three Weeks
“Austin McCormick’s bilingual
operatic dance remix of Carlo
Collodi’s classic delivers a mash-up
of genres frequently seen fused on
the Fringe stage, but rarely this
well….Baroque choreography, eclectic
music, Pop Culture, Opera,
burlesque, ballet, gender-bending,
high fashion, and sumptuous design
ensure that this feast for the eyes
succeeds in entertainment that’s
both highbrow and accessible.
Cutting-edge, yet extravagantly
classical.”

Company
XIV's PINOCCHIO was chosen as a HOT PICK
of Fringe 2011 by THE GUARDIAN
"It's hard to resist the sound of this.
New York based choreographer-director,
Austin McCormick brings together a
wildly improbable mix of Baroque,
ballet, commedia dell'arte, street dance
and the inspiration of Fellini's movies
to reinvent the familiar fairytale.
Extravagant carnival costumes and
hi-tech projections promise to deliver a
21st-century fantasy of lies, mischeif,
and redemption."

InJoy Entertainment
in partnership with Universal Arts Ltd.
is thrilled to present the World
Premiere of Company XIV's PINOCCHIO to
the International Edinburgh Fringe
Festival August 2011 at New Town
Theatre's "Majestic!"
Company XIV puts their Neo-Baroque spin
on the beloved PINOCCHIO story by Carlo
Collodi fusing Opera, Baroque, Ballet,
and Flexing/Bone Breaking with sumptuous
design and sound. PINOCCHIO is
Choreographed and Directed by Austin
McCormick in collaboration with Zane
Pihlstrom (costumes, set) and Gina
Scherr ( lighting design). McCormick is
inspired by Commedia del’Arte and the
film work of Federico Fellini, imagining
an Urban Italian Baroque landscape in
which the story unfolds… “Pleasure
Island” is conceptualized as a Venetian
Carnival, decadent, sensual, and lively.
The narrative follows the creation of
Pinocchio as a mischievous and curious
wooden boy, his amorous encounters with
the Blue Fairy, and his journey to
pleasure island- where he is ultimately
made to perform for spectators, his
escape, and return home. The role of
Pinocchio will be played by New York
street dance king, "Bonebreaker", JAY
DONN, the blue fairy by LAURA CARELESS,
and is written, adapted and narrated by
JEFF TAKACS. Also starring: Davon
Rainey, Brittanie Brown, Sean Gannon,
McKay Montz, Arika Yamada, and Lauren
Michelle Criddle.
• “…his inventive works are a brainy,
high-entertainment mix of music hall,
cabaret, theater and dance.”
(The New York Times)
• “HERE IS A COMPANY WITH SOMETHING TO
SAY AND THE BRAINS, ELOQUENCE, AND
GODDAMN BALLS WITH WHICH TO SAY IT.
(The British Theatre Guide)
